His full name is Charles Leroy Ulph. His family moved from Bateman to Shamrock when Charles was 3 years old. They brought their garage with them during the move. Charles's father is from Ireland and his mother is from the United States. Charles's mother had two uncles that fought on opposite sides of the United States Civil War: they never spoke to each other after the war. Charles's wife was born near Shamrock. There was a show every weekend at the hall in Shamrock. It was one of these shows that Charles took his future wife to as a first date.\n\nCharles has some work on family history. Charles has lived in Fort McMurray, Alberta and Chilliwack, British Columbia. He worked in multiple places throughout BC, wherever there was work. He also roamed around the Northwest Territories, places like Winnipeg. He would travel via train, plane, or boat: it depended on the location and the work. Charles was still going to school in the 1930s. Minimum wage was 40 cents an hour, but things were cheap.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873#t=0.0,470.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873/index/52228/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Great Depression, dust storms, foods grown","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873#t=470.0,912.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873/index/52228/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Things were rough for Charles's family during the 30s. His family got relief. They would go to the municipal office once a week to receive a piece of pork, beans ration for one week, and later they would receive 3 dollars a month. They got by, though. They relied on their garden. Watchdogs would come around to see if the families receiving the 3 dollars a month actually needed the money.\n\nCharles had 2 brothers and 5 sisters. There are only 3 of them left now. His siblings spread out to places like Detroit, Calgary, Winnipeg, and other places.\n\nThe dust storms were bad in the 1930s. Sometimes, when they were sitting outside with their papers, they would have to constantly shake them as dust would quickly coat the pages. It was about 10 years with very little rain. Because of this, they grew potatoes and rhubarb as those crops always grew. Charles's mother had a large garden. She was very upset when the pigs escaped their pen as they devoured all the rhubarb. The next year, they had the best rhubarb. They would boil the potatoes, fry them, bake them, mash them, or make them into a soup. They also had lots of cows so lots of butter, they also had lots of eggs. The chickens would eat insects like grasshoppers. When the chickens ate lots of grasshoppers, the yokes of their eggs would redden.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873#t=470.0,912.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873/index/52228/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Wilfrid Remple is added to the interview","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873#t=912.0,1826.38875"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58651/file/132873/index/52228/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Another interviewee, Wilfrid Rempel, is added to the interview.
