George's father met George's mother in 1917. George was registered in the municipality of Kreuzberg, but the town was renamed \"Fraserwood\" following the First World War due to anti-German sentiments. Meleb was a predominantly Ukrainian/Polish community, but there were a number of German members. George was born May 8, 1920. Meleb used to be a thriving community with 7 stores in it. The town has since wasted away. The train track ran right past George's grandfather's store. The family would take the train from Meleb to Teulon which was a schooling centre.\n\nAfter only about a year in Meleb, George's father moved the family to Winnipeg. George's father got a job delivering wood and coal in the city. The family lived there until 1927 before moving to a farm north of Beausejour, Manitoba. That year, George's uncle decided to move out to Dugald, Manitoba. When they went out to visit him on his farm, there wasn't even a road to it.\n\nGeorge's family moved to a farm north of Beausejour. It was the place where George's father was born. In fact, George's paternal grandparents still lived there. They lived with George's grandparents in a single house that was two stories tall. George's grandfather was the local postmaster which meant that everyone that needed to send or receive mail had to come to George's grandfather. George learned to read and write Ukrainian and Polish names because of this. Young people used to come to the post office to socialize on Friday afternoons. George's grandfather was post master for 42 years. He also mastered 7 languages, but struggled with English and French. He was proficient in Ukrainian, Polish, German, Yiddish, Czech, and English. Whenever he saw a sign, he would always sound it out. He turned the business over to his boys in 1974 or 1975. He started going to university when he was 55 years old. George loved history, geography, and politics. He attended 1st grade in a Catholic school in Winnipeg because his mother's family was Catholic. After moving to Beausejour, George went to public school. There was a Catholic church there. When George grew up, he really pushed the public school system. George's father got in trouble with the Catholic priest because he wouldn't let them teach catechism in the public school. Later on, George's father got involved with the New Democratic Party. The school went from grades 1 to 8. George taught there for a time.\n\nGeorge went to grade 9. He did well in school and loved school. He excelled in history and geography. George didn't continue school because he needed to help his parents out on the farm. George's father didn't join the school board until after George had moved away from Beausejour. George completed grade 9, but he never graduated.\n\nGeorge never served in the war, though his younger brother, Henry, did. His grandmother could speak 4 languages, but couldn't write; she signed her name with an \"X\". This was reflective of the education of her time.\n\nGeorge was quite good at school. He would sometimes receive the strap for being a smart aleck.\n\nGeorge's main occupation was farming. He increased his farm from 200 acres to 3000 acres. He later sold it in order to expand his implement business. George was never short of work throughout his career. He worked for a dealership in winter. They invited him to become a dealer and he later bought the building across from them.
