Her father came to Canada in 1911 and her mother followed around 1913-1915 some time. Her family moved to Calgary because they knew other Ukrainians moving to there. Her father moved straight to Calgary when he came to Canada. In 1947, Kay moved to Medicine Hat when she married her husband, Stephen.  \nIn terms of education, both Kay and her husband finished grade 11 in school. He went into many different fields and worked as a projectionist, played the violin, was a ham radio operator, and she speaks fondly of his education. Kay became a seamstress and tells the interviewer that she sewed everything in the house. She went into retail and did alterations for different stores while her husband worked as a projectionist. \nKay lived with her parents and her two sisters and her brother when she was growing up. Kay was the youngest child and remembers her siblings, especially her oldest sister taking advantage of her age and \"bossing\" her. She says lunch could have been soup or sandwiches. She lists different Ukrainian foods as supper items, including pyrohy (perogies), cabbage rolls, and studynets' (head cheese). Kay talks about how she still makes these foods. For Christmas, Kay remembers having turkey and wheat (kutia), potatoes, pyrohy, and cabbage rolls, mixing Ukrainian food with Canadian. She describes how the wheat was prepared. Her parents only celebrated Christmas on December 25th, never on January 7th after they moved to Canada. Kay remembers that they purchased general foods at the store, anything that could be cooked up by her mother. They purchased foods like milk and bread, but her mother had a garden where they would grow vegetables. \nKay's mother would sew all the children's clothing and wanted all three girls to dress alike. She mentions that she would wear her sisters' dresses as she grew up (like hand-me-downs). She remembers very little being bought because \"nobody could afford anything at that time.\" She fondly remembers her relationship with her siblings, particularly her brother. He used to play football in Calgary and won the Grey Cup in 1948 with the Calgary Stampeders in Toronto. \nKay remembers for chores that she had to stack up coal and clean up the house. She says she went to night school to learn Ukrainian and then to dancing school as well. Her mother was responsible for looking after the four children and for looking after boarders in their home. During the war, she would pluck chickens in a factory. \nHer family home was decorated with paper streamers at Christmas and during the rest of the year there were pictures of the family on the walls. The home had two bedrooms and Kay remembers having had to sleep on the couch with her 2 sisters. She tells a story about how the bedrooms were very small and the furniture did not fit in the rooms. \nKay describes the food that her family would have at Easter, including her mother making paska or babka for the family. \nKay embroidered and did the sewing for her family when she was 12 years old. She learnt from her mother a little and learnt sewing in Home Economics class in grade 6. She made her whole Ukrainian costume by herself with embroidery. Her sisters taught each other to cross stitch. Kay believes her sister must have learnt from someone in the Ukrainian hall first. Kay did not know any of them because that was considered \"old country.\" She remembers the Canadian tradition of Christmas presents, and talks about receiving things that were valuable to a person. She talks about a coffee table that her parents received. She remembers getting a little hanky, as well. They didn't have a Christmas tree until Kay was in her teens and she would bring in a small tree to the house. They believed in Santa Claus when she was very little but it did not really last long. \nEaster was \"just a time to boil eggs and eat\" according to Kay. They never colored Easter Eggs themselves. Birthdays would always have a cake to celebrate. All three of her siblings had the same birthday date, just two years apart. Kay says gifts weren't very elaborate but they would always do something to celebrate for everyone's birthday. Her family did not really observe Dominion Day. She remembers her father even having to work on holidays. \nKay does not remember having anything special for Thanksgiving with her family. For Halloween the kids would dress up in whatever they had and would go door to door to get apples and candy. They made some decorations for Halloween at school and have a little party.  Kay remembers having taken part in a Malanka festival once in Redcliff, AB in the 1990s, but never before that. \nKay used to belong to a Ukrainian dance and choral ensemble. Kay remembers having wine for New Years and kissing each other for midnight. There was nothing special food-wise. Kay's family did not celebrate Jordan or any other holidays, but her father would take them to Banff on a Sunday on his free pass and eat boiled eggs, donuts, and bread, by taking the train and walking to the hot springs. Kay remembers going to the Stampede when it was on 8th Avenue, going on rides, and eating candy floss every year.\nAt that time, she was working at a dress factory working for $6 a week. When they changed to paying by piece work, she was able to make more money. They would perform in concerts and would sing together for special events like anniversaries or Christmas. They sang songs in English and in Ukrainian. She tells a story about performing at the Canadian Forces Base in Suffield for soldiers.\nHer dad used to tell stories about the old country. She tells a story about her father's contact with his sisters after he had moved to Canada and how they lost contact after he was unable to send them money back to the Old Country. Stories were told when the family would get together. She remembers her mother being strict about the family having to eat supper together everyday. She says that she would go to St. Georges Island with her friends on Sundays but she would still be home in time to eat with her family.  \nKay started Ukrainian dancing at about 4 years old. She taught dance until she was 70 years old. She learnt dance at the Ukrainian hall in her community. They would be in the hall at least twice a week for rehearsal. She also attended night school to learn to read and write Ukrainian. There would also be social dances in the hall. They would also have sports in the hall, particularly badminton. Kay remembers dancing things like the arkan, hopak, and the metelytsia (butterfly). \nKay used to play the mandolin and wishes she could have taken piano lessons, but they couldn't afford them. Her family had to pay for the Ukrainian lessons at the hall and the teacher would be there to teach language, music, and dances. She would play mostly Ukrainian folk music, but they would play a variety of music from different cultures. They also used to put on plays and operas. \nKay acknowledges that she does not remember much Ukrainian now, but Ukrainian was her first language and she would speak it at home until she went to school. Once she started going to school they would speak English. They belonged primarily to the Ukrainian community and the hall was like a second home for them. No one in their family collected any additional information about the family once they moved to Canada. Her parents were adamant on becoming Canadian and living as Canadians. Her husband was also born in Canada, in Saskatchewan, and he was Ukrainian. They met each other in Medicine Hat, and they had seen each other four times when he asked her to marry him.
