He was one of the men imprisoned in a concentration camp from 1915-1920 when the Canadian Government issued the first war measures act, arrested in Vancouver at the age of 20. He was moved to several camps because he was considered an agitator. Life for her father was difficult because he lost his job with the Canadian Brotherhood of Railway Employees, was unemployed during the Depression, and he died at age 47. Her family was unable to pay their taxes and lost their house in the late 1930s. They lived near two packing houses (slaughterhouses), Swift and Canada Packers, and several the neighbor men worked there. She recalls playing baseball near her house as a child. There were fights, often between different races.\nFather came to Canada in 1905 and mother came to Canada around 1921 and both spoke, read and wrote in Polish. She talks about the mix of language use prior to this point between her, her family, neighbors and relatives. Anne knew Ukrainian words that weren't included in the lessons and was frustrated when her language knowledge was not compatible with what was being taught in Ukrainian language lessons. Her second language is French, which she learnt in grade school and became proficient in the language when she lived in France. Anne's immediate neighbors were mainly German and English, which influenced the language use of her family growing up. Her parents lost possession of their house because they hadn't paid taxes and were only able to buy it back in the 1950's.
