His dad came to Canada in 1923, mother and William arrived in 1929. He remembers a lot of fruit trees and early spring in the Old Country, while in Canada it was much colder, and everything they planted could be frozen. He was the only child in the family. Father's first homestead was in Whitecourt, Alberta. He got the land when it was snow on the ground. In spring, he realized that the land is covered with rocks. It discouraged him, and he moved to the Rycroft area, Alberta, and bought a different quarter. \nHis father spent three years in the army and four years in the war. After that, he decided to go to Canada. Before his wife and son came, he worked construction, farms, railway. Then he had to clear his own lands. \nWilliam remembers their trip across the Atlantic. It took them ten days to cross the ocean and then a week by rail from Montreal to Rycroft. On the ship, they were supplied with food. They brought \"not that much\" with themselves from the Old Country. He was impressed with bushes, rocks, and lakes when they arrived. They stayed in a little log house with a shingle roof all winter. William speaks about grim realities and the hardship they encountered during their first years in Canada.
