Andrew grew up on that farm and went to a country school that was 4 miles away. He finished grade 8 before going to another school for 2 years via correspondence. After that, he went to a college in Edmonton, Alberta for 5 years before coming back to Gravelbourg to farm. They played softball in the spring, hockey in the winter, soccer and basketball as well. Andrew was lonesome in Edmonton as he could only afford to travel back for Christmas. Andrew was a star baseball pitcher. He talks about dislocating his elbow playing baseball and his arm has been crooked ever since.\n\nOne year, the teacher was boarding at a house a mile away from where Andrew lived. So he would pick her up on the way to school. He was either 11 or 12 at the time. She later married Andrew's first cousin. She and Andrew are still good friends.\n\nAndrew's father's family immigrated to Canada in 1907 and his mother's family came to Canada in 1921. His mother came from the former Yugoslavia. Andrew's maternal grandfather was a barber in Yugoslavia, but had to milk cows when he immigrated to Canada. Andrew's paternal grandfather dug sewers for the city of Regina until he bought a homestead in 1911.\n\nAndrew's wife was born in Odessa, Saskatchewan. Andrew's mother would do a lot of canning due to the lack of refrigerators. On special occasions, they had turkey and once had goose.\n\nAt Christmas, they would have turkey and cabbage rolls. When Andrew was little, they would go to his grandmother's place for dinner on Christmas Day. There were always lots of kids around and lots of noise. Christmas was always a big meal with lots of food. Andrew's mother used to make a vegetable soup with paprika and vegetables in it. Later on in 1956, they got a pressure system for running water for an indoor bathtub and sinks. Prior to that, bathwater had to be heated up on the stove. The house was built by Andrew's grandfather in 1924. The house is still standing, though it has had many renovations.\n\nThere were curtains and blinds in the house. Rooms were painted different colours. The house was comfortable and big enough for all of them. The dining room was nice and off limits when they were little. They ate in the kitchen, not the dining room. There was a sofa that could open up and be used as a bed.\n\nAndrew's mother was a crafty person. They would go to midnight mass and, afterwards, they had food. That was also when they would open gifts. Andrew believes the celebration on Christmas Eve to be a German tradition. The first language they learned was German.\n\nBirthdays would be celebrated with cake, candles, and get togethers with cousins or neighbours.\n\nSometimes, they would go to Swift Current for the rodeo on Dominion Day. They would watch people try to watch the horses and bulls. Andrew thought they were crazy.\n\nThanksgiving was a turkey dinner. Later on, it became a family get-together.\n\nAndrew remembers dances around Halloween. Most of the time, they stood on guard against the trick playing boys that might come around.\n\nNew Years was celebrated with dances or parties. The next day wasn't as fun. Andrew never made resolutions as he didn't think he would keep them.\n\nEaster was celebrated by going to a long church service and, afterwards, have a large meal. At the first country school Andrew went to, all the kids spoke German, but they spoke English in school. German was spoken at recess, before school, and after school. The kids spoke a different dialect than Andrew's family, but they still understood each other. Andrew took lessons in French, Latin (in college), and a little bit of Greek.\n\nAndrew's nearest neighbours were his grandparents and a few cousins that did not live far away. It was mostly relatives that lived nearby.\n\nAndrew's best friends were his cousins. They used to play ball, go sledding, sleigh riding, skating (if there was ice on the pond), and other kids games.\n\nAndrew's parents' friends were mostly relatives. Groups of families went together.\n\nFor entertainment, Andrew's family would play cards, checkers, bridge, and listen to the radio.
