He hasn't any second name.\nHe was born on September 10, 1926, in Haskett, Manitoba, and spent there the first five years of his life. Later, his whole family moved to the area of Mountainside, Manitoba. When he was 15, the family moved to Deloraine, Manitoba. They also lived in Altona, Manitoba. After his marriage, he lived on a farm between Whitewater and Boissevain (also in Manitoba). In 1971, the family moved to Winnipeg. For six months, he lived in Mexico doing work for the church.\nHis parents came to Canada in 1925 with three children. At the beginning, they lived on the farm of some relatives.\nHarm's father was born in Osterwick (today Pavlivka, Zaporizhzhia province, Ukraine; his mother in Grigorevka, also Ukraine. His father grew up also in Grigorevka where he met his mother. Harms wife was born in Boissevain, Manitoba.\nHis schooling was limited to elementary education. He finished with grade 8. Later, he went to the Mennonite Bible College in Winnipeg for one year. He also did some bible schooling before that.\nHis family had horses on the farm. He had to do a lot of different chores.\nAt the age of 30, he was called into lay ministry and left farming in 1971. Then, he became a full-time pastor. They had a Christmas tree, at Easter they had coloured eggs. They had pictures (photographs and framed paintings) on the wall and a lot of calendars. The house was wallpapered and changed every four, five years. He recalls a story when his sister painted a picture (with some religious writing) behind glass and brought it to the church mission sale. There, his father bought the picture back for 20 dollars. There were also porcelain pictures with a bible verse.\nHis sisters learned not only knitting and crocheting but were taking sewing lessons at a seamstress. They went to church every Sunday with few exceptions: When the temperature dropped below minus 20 degrees, they couldn't go as horses also suffered from the cold. They had to travel up to 7 miles to church. Then, they had their own church service at home. His father would read a sermon, they would sing some songs and have a Sunday school lesson.\nHe recalls that the Mennonite faith was a \"way of life\" for them and for the whole community.\nHarms describes how Christmas was celebrated in his family. They celebrated it 2-3 days. On the second holiday, the church youth (Jugendverein in German) would lead the whole service. His mother was playing Santa Claus but the children didn't realize that as she was disguised with an old Russian coat. It was an important day as almost all were farmers.\nHalloween was an occasion to shed the rules and laws, e. g., a hay rack was set on fire. He heard the story that someone put a cow on a trailer and put the trailer with the cow in front of the door of a house so that the residents couldn't get out. He recalls several other stories.\nNew Years Eve is called Silvesterabend in German. It was an evening of reflection. They were telling tales and singing.\nThey don't have any parish feast day.\nThe beginning of the Lent season and the Advent season is also important.\nJohn Deere Day was also celebrated. This was the day when the John Deere dealer would put on a show in Boissevain, Manitoba. They saw an animated film inside the shop.\nThe farm auction sales were also some sort of cultural events, there was an auctioneer calls R. H. Armstrong. People went there without buying anything.\nThe Mennonites continued working at so-called \"calendar holidays\" (Canadian non-religious holidays).\nLabour Day was honoured in school, and the children had to clean the yard.\nIn the family, they sang at home, in church and at gatherings. They mostly sang in High German, not in Low German. All the church services were in High German, there was no English which came in only in the late 1950s.\nHe was singing mostly religious songs but also many folk songs. The youth (Jugend in German) gathered at Sunday evening. The word 'sex' was never mentioned. He once watched a man dancing at a table in his school years.\nThey had a piano in their family, two of his sisters played without taking lessons. He learned to play the violin and the mandolin. They also had mouth organs. Later, they had also an organ in the church. There was even a discussion about bringing a piano to the church as there was fear that people wouldn't want to sing anymore.\nHarms remembers the day his family bought a radio in the mid-1940s. He listened to casts like 'Lone Ranger'. They also had music festivals (Singerfest in German) which brought together members of the Mennonite Church. The festival took place in a machine shed or a hay loft. Everything was in German. There were plays staged by the Jugendverein (Young people's endeavours).
