She grew up mostly in Brosseau. In the middle of the 1950s, she was attending high school in St Paul, AB, about sixty kilometres further east. In 1959 she moved to Edmonton. Melnychuk's father emigrated to Canada in 1928 and later her mother came with their seven children. She emigrated in the fall of 1930. Their first homestead was in Brosseau, AB, and they resided there all the time. They had relatives there already and made their home close to them. The father had a nephew that emigrated several years before. Melnychuk does not know where her parents were born but they lived in a village close to Chernivtsi. They had Eaton's catalogue too. \"It was almost our bible.\" And Simpsons catalogue. It was a special event for them. They used to go on a sled from house to house carolling. Lydia does not recall her parents coming with them, only her siblings. The tradition of having Christmas was important to them but they did not follow tradition strictly. Christmas tree was not essential for Christmas. But the mother used to allow them to have a tree because everybody else had it. But the emphasis was not on the gifts but on what Christmas is about. They did not bring straw into the house.
