Well, life has given us COVID-19 and forced almost all education online. This is a perfect opportunity to use AI to foster online education. I will describe three novel and intertwined AI technologies: (1) Jill Watson, a virtual teaching assistant for answering questions based on educational documents such as class syllabi, (2) SAMI, a virtual social agent that promotes online interactions, and (3) VERA, a virtual experimentation research assistant for supporting inquiry-based learning of scientific knowledge. The initial results are positive: (i) Jill Watson Q&A has been used by >5,000 students in >20 online classes and saved teachers >500 hours of work; (iii) SAMI has been used in >10 online classes and promotes social interaction and community; and (iii) VERA has been used 2 blended classes and is freely available online to a million users around the world. Put together, these innovative technologies help make online learning simultaneously more available (by making materials available online), affordable (by saving teacher time), and achievable (by providing learning assistance and fostering student engagement).

Bio: Ashok Goel is a Professor in the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Institute of Technology and the Chief Scientist with Georgia Tech’s Center for 21st Century Universities.
