Because they had 3 neighbours, Rose's father only had to take the kids to school once per month.\n\nThey had fun by seeing who could walk the railroad tracks the longest before stumbling off. They had to pack their lunches with them. There was plenty to eat, but not junk food. They had a garden so there was lots of vegetables and they always had lots of meat. Rose's mother did a lot of canning, including meat canning.\n\nThe old school Rose went to is now gone. Every child had a nickname in school. Rose can't remember what her nickname was. After two years, Rose opened up her own store. John quit Richmond's to help Rose with the store. They did that for close to 25 years. John worked in the store until he was 85 years old and couldn't work anymore. He loved the store and all the chores that came with it.\n\nIn the store, they used to teach sewing. He mellowed as he got older.\n\nIn summer, they would go to the lake and catch perch. Rose's mother would fry up the fish. There was also 1 bedroom downstairs. The house had some pictures, but not too much in the way of decoration.\n\nAt Christmas, they would have a tree brought into the house. They didn't have too many decorations, so they would thread popcorn onto the tree. On Christmas, they always received a bag with an orange, an apple, and some candy. Rose doesn't remember getting too many gifts growing up as there wasn't much money for toys. Rose thinks the boys went out on Halloween when they were older.
