Halloween was not celebrated, but we heard about people doing some nasty things, for example, knocking a fence down, or putting a democrat wagon on the barn. Nowadays those pranks can be harmful to children: they can put pins or razor blades into the apples, and there were cases when small children didn't know and ate them. Canada day was not known on the farms. It used to be more interesting back than. At the Northlands Exhibition Grounds there were live performances. Now it's all commercial, stuffed with kiosks selling stuff that nobody needs. Malanka was celebrated only in the later years, after I got married, not during my childhood. Sometimes they would put up plays, they would gather all in embroidered shirts, girls would wear kershiefs. It was all in the hall. Our hall was built when I could already go there. There were basket socials. Girls or women would make baskets with food, and then there was an auction and men would buy a basket and they would eat together with the girl or woman who made that basket, even if a woman was married. The money from the auction helped build and pay off the hall. Little by little it was paid off. I didn't do it myself much. They took her to the hospital, but in three or four days, she died.\nI remember we had catalogues and cut pictures of the catalogue and that how we were playing.\n\nI had an aunt had 16 years when she got married. She got to know that family, a good family, and they got married.\n\npetty coat\n\nShe was 10 years and could plait?\nShe was 10 when she died and she was plaiting even before. She was 9 years when she was plaiting.\nAnd how did you play with the catalogue?\nYou know, then there weren't any stores to go and you don't know what to choose. So, they were sending catalogues. Simpsons Sears, you know. And we made clippings. She was older, so she was making more clippings. And we were playing that way, you know.\nYou know, in summer we were outside, but in winter we made clippings and fixed them.\n\n(The are continuing to look at photographs.)\nThat's already the house which we sold before we moved here. But we sold it also and bought a larger one.\nI was very nice, I had many flowers around the house, and a garden.\nAnd we had neighbours, and we were gathering. My husband and I, we went to them at holidays. But they have all died.\n\nAnd that's at the cemetery where my grandparents are buried. In Wostok, there's the church where we got married. There (at the cemetery), there is a table and you put a table cloth there and food.\n\nThat's also our house \n\nIt's my husband's birthday (in English) and of my grandson, at the same day.
