She was born on the farm south of Bellis, Alberta. January 1, 1925. She grew up in the same yard as she was born. She went to Irondale School, which is a half a mile away from her farm. She lived here until she was 17. Her father came to Canada in 1912. Her father came in early 1912. The rest of his family came in right after that. The family lived in a mud and straw hut for the first winter. The men went out and cut logs to build a house. She talks about the first year on the homestead in 1912. Her father was born in Pozdymyr, which was under Austria at the time. Her mother was born in Canada, about 13-14 miles away from where Anne grew up. Mother was born in a dugout. Anyone passing by would stay at the shelter for the night. Her uncle had homesteaded the place. Her husband was born in Edmonton in 1922. In about 1940, her father sold the farm and relocated to Spedden, Alberta. About a year after that, she left home and went to live in Edmonton. Since then she has lived in Edmonton. Anne has grade nine schooling. If she wanted to go on, she would have had to walk 5.5-6.5 miles every morning and evening. She worked for a while on a farm near Didsbury. In Edmonton she worked for a furrier, repairing fur coats. MacEwan, Anderson and Morris Furs. When her mother married she went to live with her husband's parents. They lived together. She grew up with grandparents in home until they died. Then she was basically alone until she got married. She has two brothers and two sisters. There was milk and usually porridge, maybe eggs. Very plain dishes. Sometimes her mom would make pancakes. Bread, butter, cheese. They had a full Ukrainian Christmas Eve supper. Her family purchases coal oil, sugar, salt, materials to make clothing, coffee and tea at the store. She wore homemade clothing. Girls had to wear dresses. She reflects on how cold it was in the winter going to school, and how she was first in her district to wear pants in about 1935/6. Two cousins came to live with them. As a child, she was responsible for looking after the little ones, garden, chickens, pigs. Always things to do with precious little time to play. Her father started in the spring with preparing the soil for planting, summer fallow, harvest, winter he would go find wood for firewood or to build a building. All log buildings. Her mother never went into the bush, would always be at home. Get the garden ready, look after the children and house. Milking and tending to the pigs and chickens. Houses were mud plastered. Once or twice a year they would white wash. Icons or pictures of the holy family would be on the walls. Framed pictures from calendars. Some places they had curtains. They didn't have curtains. Everything at their place was homemade.
