He was born October 30, 1924 in an Edmonton hospital. Bill lived in Edmonton until he was 13 or 14, then moved to Victoria, British Columbia. At 18, he joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.\n\nBill's family, on his mother's side, came to Canada in 1905 by boat. They landed in Montreal and, from there, took a train to Edmonton. From Edmonton, they took horses to the Barrhead area of Alberta. Bill's father came over in the late 1800s, stayed for a time, went back to England to serve in the army, then came back to Canada. Bill can't remember too much about his grandparents: he knows they came from England but he's not sure from where in England. His mother was from Lancashire.\n\nBill's father joined the Alberta Provincial Police, but Bill isn't certain when that was. He was a game warden before that. With the Provincial Police, Bill's father was a detective sergeant, and Bill says he was a very good detective. Bill's grandfather became a justice of the peace, appointed by The Crown, to handle the less serious cases in the community. Whenever police would go up to his grandfather's ranch, officers would be treated to food and have their horses put in the barn. In Edmonton, Bill sold Liberty Magazines, delivered newspaper as an Edmonton Journal Carrier, delivered groceries for Safeway, worked for a flower shop, he sold men's clothing for Hudson's Bay Company. In Victoria, he worked on a tulip bulb farm, he worked in the shipyards, painting the hulls of ships during the war (he didn't like that job). One ship he painted was torpedoes 80 miles out from Victoria. He got a job with the Hudson Bay Company in Victoria in the meat department. He got a job at Straight's clothing store. He also had a part time job delivering furniture. A driver he was once paired with was the suspect in a murder and the police asked him to keep his ears open. Bill also wrestled professionally, but he didn't earn much there.\n\nFinally, in 1943, he joined the Mounted Police. Bill says he did everything with the police, investigations, murder investigations, undercover work, worked with dogs, administrative duties, and taught first aid. After retiring, he went into retail security, catching shoplifters. He had a hand in 21,000 arrests. After leaving on bad terms, he worked in juvenile detention and eventually with youth centres. He went back to retail security with Canadian Tire while also running his own magic store.\n\nIn 1965, he bought a parcel of land out in Woodlands where they had a cottage. In Edson, he and Bill Owen, started a rodeo. Bill owned a number of horses when he lived in Edmonton and Edson. He started a program where he would lease the horses for a year and would take time to teach the kids how to ride horses. Bill went into partnership with a Chinese man that owned a pair of restaurants in Winnipeg. That went well until the man's business partner discovered he had used restaurant money to purchase farmland.\n\nAfter his retirement from the RCMP, Bill could profit from his interest in magic. His grandson is also involved in magic and has been on Sesame Street a number of times. Bill says that his interest in magic was never for profit, but only for charity.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956#t=665.0,1572.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956/index/59336/annotation/9","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"magic shows","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"occupations","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"police","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"security guards","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"small business owners","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956#t=665.0,1572.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956/index/59336/annotation/10","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP)","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956#t=665.0,1572.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956/index/59336/annotation/11","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Identity, food, meals, food procurement","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956#t=1572.0,1871.62122"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132956/index/59336/annotation/12","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Growing up, Bill lived with his mom, his dad, and his sister. The family belonged to the Anglican Church, but Bill's father didn't go to church. Bill remembers his father always telling him to go to church; Bill says it was a \"do as I say and not as I do' kind of thing. Bill would go to church every week as a child. In Edmonton, the church was a long ways off (about a mile). There was a freight train that passed near the church and a number of the kids would jump on the train and ride it to the church. Bill comments that it was such a dangerous thing to do.\n\nBill says that Christmas was terrible. They had a beautifully decorated tree and a large turkey dinner. Bill's father was a photographer and required long exposure times. They had to set up lights, set up the camera on a tripod, dress up for the photo in a shirt and tie, and Bill's mother and sister had to dress up as well. His father got cranky. They weren't allowed to open anything until pictures were taken. Bill still feels that at Christmas, and doesn't find it to be a happy time.\n\nThey had their meal on Christmas day. Bill can't remember if they went to church on Christmas day. He says the church, being a mile away, wasn't easy to get to. Church was not a family thing for them. Bill went to Sunday school and, later, taught Sunday school after getting married. He and his wife got involved in church activities. When he was young, Christmas was dreadful.\n\nFor Easter, Bill remembers going around finding Easter eggs. Bill didn't decorate eggs.\n\nBill's mother didn't partake in afternoon tea, but his mother did. His mother was also into tea leaf reading, as were the women she had tea with. \n\nBill remembers manners were strictly enforced. At Sunday dinners, children were not allowed to talk. If they did, they would be hit or sent to their rooms. Bill's mother smoked, but was not a heavy smoker. Neither of his parents drank much. His mother enjoyed wine, while his father enjoyed whiskey. Bill doesn't like scotch. Bill's parents didn't have parties like Bill hosted later in his life.\n\nBirthdays were celebrated, but not like Bill celebrated with his kids; there were no parties. Dominion Day was celebrated, but not to any great extent. On Thanksgiving, they had a meal, but didn't have the \"giving thanks\" part of the holiday. Bill doesn't think that part was taught to him. Halloween saw pranks being played. They would \"soak\" windows. This meant marking windows with bars of soap and then running. On New Years, when Bill was young, his parents would go out while the maid looked after them. Later, however, it was not celebrated. They would listen to it happen on the radio, but that was about it. They didn't observe any holy days or parish feast days affiliated with the church.\n\nBill does not believe they celebrated any uniquely English holidays. Armistice Day wasn't a holiday, but it was observed with the moment of silence and poppies. Various cadets in school would march. Prior to the war, there were cadet corps in schools. Bill laments the change from that following the war. Bill talks about the need for military preparedness. Bill begins talks about the dangers of biker gangs like the Hell's Angels.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957#t=650.0,1377.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957/index/59337/annotation/16","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"birthdays","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Christmas","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Halloween","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"practical jokes","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Thanksgiving day","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957#t=650.0,1377.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957/index/59337/annotation/17","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Anglican Church","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Armistice Day","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"cadets","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957#t=650.0,1377.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957/index/59337/annotation/18","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Singing, music, dancing, songs, theatre","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957#t=1377.0,1726.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58681/file/132957/index/59337/annotation/19","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Bill's mother was a singer and she was a good singer.
