She says: \"I grew up on a farm with my parents and then I got married from home and we lived in the Carvel district\". This happened in 1937. Bessie lived there for some time until she moved to the city of Edmonton, sometime in the 1960s. Since then she has been living in Edmonton.\nBessie's dad came to Canada in 1899 and mom came in 1900. They did not know each other in the old country. When they came to Canada they moved to Calmar district. Bessie's father was born either in Tukhlia or Lviv. She did not remember for sure. One of the parents came from either one.\nBessie's husband was born in Stony Plain, Alberta. His parents came from Ukraine. \nRegarding schooling, Bessie went 'only as far as grade 11', it was English school. She worked on the farm and after moving to the city she worked in a store. \nAs a child, she lived with parents. She had 10 siblings. But 2 boys died when they were small and there were 8 of them living. Of course, with a pantry also. And a storage room downstairs. [Q: What did you keep in the storage room?] Well, we kept staple food and our clothes that we wore. Either in our house, at our place or sometimes at somebody else's place. But I remember the priest stayed mostly at our house. Like when he would come for the weekend, he would generally come on Saturday so as to have a mass on Sunday.' \n4. 'In 1918...'\n5. 'It was mostly in a house that we had... We sang Ukrainian carols. When the parents were able to afford something then we get either some clothing or whatever... Nothing really special or whatever. Like, you know, nowadays you get all kinds of things who knows what. But at that time no, we did not get much of anything. Well, we could not afford it. This was the main thing, we could not afford it.'\n6. 'Yes, that's for sure. Put it down beneath the table. And some on the table covered with a sheet and that is how we had our Christmas. Dad would bring it [hay] in. [Did he ever explained it to you why he did that?] No, I don't think he did. And if he did, I forget. [Did you go caroling?] Well, when we were older already, going to school and all that, we used to go caroling from house to house...'\n7. 'We would have paska, what else would we have for Easter..., there was kovbasa, and... meat, and bread, potatoes, vegetables. That is about all. [Did you take any food to the church to be blessed?] Yes, we did. Of course, with the priest staying at our house we did not have to. Because he blessed the food in the house. But people did bring to the church. It all depended if he was able to go to somebody's place he did otherwise they brought it to church'\n8. 'We used to just colouring them. Give a different colour. I do not think anybody wrote easter eggs, but I remember us colouring eggs. [what paints did you use? How did you colour them?] I forget what colours we had.' \n9. 'Yes, that we did. And we even put little candles on the tree. Light up the candles. It was dangerous but just have not thought of it being dangerous.
