Sundown is in southern Manitoba. Tony remembers the layout and location of the homestead. Tony grew up on the homestead until he conscripted into the army in 1945. Tony didn't want to kill anyone and many people conscripted ran away.\n\nTony lived all over, after the army. He was trained to fight in Japan, but the war ended before he could be sent there. He worked as a miner in various locations of different provinces and territories. Tony talks about the different jobs he's had over the years. He did some farm work in addition to mining. Harvesting was a tough job in those days and Tony doesn't think people now could do the same job as back then.\n\nTony continues to talk about his experience as a miner. He worked in many different kinds of mines, from nickel to uranium. He considered taking courses in cooking, but the profession paid little, so he changed his mind. Tony went to a college in British Columbia to learn small engines.\n\nThe school in Sundown was a mile and a half from Tony's home. Some kids had to walk farther, some less. The school was large for its location. The school had more room than what was needed for the number of kids, even though there were a lot of kids.\n\nTony's family spoke Ukrainian at home as his mother did not speak English and his father spoke only a little. Tony never studied Ukrainian, so he didn't read or write it. He picked up on English quickly as his mind was \"like a computer\".\n\nThere were no male teachers at Tony's school. The teacher was English. She once gave Tony the yardstick after he scratched one of the girls in class. After he came back from the army, he took the teacher dancing as it was comical. School was only taught in English. They might speak Ukrainian while playing games, but English was the only language taught. Different schools would compete with each other in various games like baseball or softball. No one was very good at it.\n\nFor activities, they would go swimming in the river, though not everyone had access to the river. They would also pick berries which would then be sold at the store.\n\nIn winter, they would trap rabbits, weasels, and other animals. They didn't have a rifle until later and Tony was never a good shot. During the war, they could get $1 per squirrel they killed. The animals would be caught for their fur. They would also catch skunks as the lard from them could be used on burns, even though it was not good to eat.\n\nThey made their own toys in those days. Tony accidentally cut his finger making one such toys. He talks about some of the games they would play with those toys. Tony lists some of the dishes they had. They only had Tony's family for Christmas Eve. Tony's father would sing, as well. Relatives would visit on Christmas Day. He thinks the other families were jealous because Tony's family had a nicer home with a river running through part of it.\n\nTony thinks his family came around 1915. Tony had 4 brothers and 4 sisters. However, 2 of his sisters passed away. Tony was the youngest child. The nearest hospital was 20 miles away, but they wouldn't go unless it was an emergency. Sundown was the nearest town to the homestead. They could buy nails for things on the farm. People could purchase groceries in town, but there were no vegetables that could be purchased in town. Trains couldn't transport fresh vegetables as it took too long for the trains to travel the distances. There was also a beer parlour where the train conductor would spend a lot of time. Being a conductor was a good job, according to Tony. Any job working for the railway was a good one as it was a steady job, but there weren't many of those jobs to go around.\n\nThe post office was always run by a local resident. In Sundown, it was an English person that ran the post office. When conscription came, the post office manager was angry at the young men of Sundown because they constantly avoided the post office manager. People tried to hide from him.\n\nTony got a bicycle for $15 when he was 15 or 16. Tony used to ride that bike into town and to school. He was the only one at the time to own a bike as $15 was hard to come by. Tony earned the money himself by cutting wood for a paper mill.
