His mother was a Ukrainian and she was Greek Orthodox. Later, there were some disagreements about religion, and all children went their own ways: One brother remained a devout Catholic, another became a Pentecostal. He himself goes to the church that has the store open, mostly to the Protestant Church.\nThere were disagreements between his parents and the priest. First, he went to the Church of Christ before the war. His older siblings were all brought up Catholic.\nHe once again emphasizes that he didn't get any love from his parents.\nHe describes how Christmas was celebrated in his family. It was a Ukrainian Christmas they had. They ate boiled wheat and poppy seed on Christmas Eve. They had pyrohy and cabbage rolls and turkey on Christmas day. They celebrated both Christmases (December 25 and January 7).\nThey would play card games at Christmas, and children's games like hide-and-seek or Kick the can.\nHis mother always painted eggs for Easter. His mother would sing Ukrainian songs. His mother could read and write English pretty good. They had their own little choir in the family. They didn't attend church services at the farm. Her mother made 'baba' for Easter.\nHe recalls that people from Ukraine brought a whole suitcase of wooden Easter eggs and wanted to sell them in Canada.\nThey celebrated birthdays, they would have a sip of wine and a birthday cake. They celebrated his father's 50th birthday. His father lived to 78.\nBogusky thinks that only WW II brought people realize what Canada Day means. He criticizes that nowadays so much money is spent on fireworks on Canada Day - the money could be spent in a more intelligent way. He criticizes that it is tax payer's money that is spent so foolishly.\nThey were not isolated, they were only five and a half miles out of town. Before the war, they had an old Ford Model A. But they went to town very seldom.\nIn 1935, he went to Coaldale school, five and a half miles away. There was no grade 11 in their two-room-country school. When the weather was bad, he rode his horse, when it was good, he rode his bicycle. It wouldn't take him to long when the wind was good.
