The name Maudez comes from the old Celtic Magu-Tid, servant of God. Saint Maudez, the tenth son of an Irish prince, came to Armorica around 528. He is said to have landed at Port-Béni near Pleubian and later reaches Gueldenes, a wild island, which would later be known as Maudez Island in honor of the saint. Legend says that Saint Maudez rid Gueldenes of the worms that infested it; the island then became habitable. Later, people would go there to cure themselves of worms. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe chapel and fountain date from the 11th century, when the lords of Guingamp built a place of worship in honor of Saint Modez. the cemetery was located there, and the rector resided near the chapel in the presbytery, which still exists today. The church was rebuilt in the 15th century, then converted into a chapel in the 18th century.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe water from the fountain, located halfway between the chapel and the old presbytery, is said to cure skin diseases. Legend has it that after invoking the Saint, a mixture of earth, worms, and water from the fountain should be applied to the wounds. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eToday, the Pardon of St-Modez, resumed in 1966, takes place on the 4th Sunday of June.
