They had a lot of activities in the snow, played with kittens and puppies a lot. As he was the oldest child he felt responsible for other children and even at a young age, he had a lot of housework to do.\nRemembers there was once -45 degree and he still needed to walk to school. The children only were allowed to skip school if there was a blizzard condition and it was dangerous outside, but coldness did not stop them. His parents paid an extra 8 Dollars tax per year to make it possible for him to attend the school at the location he wanted.\nThe teacher was laughing at him as he did not know the English language and spoke Ukrainian. His first teacher was Anglo-Saxon. Remembers that he had difficulties distinguishing English from Ukrainian. Remembers being punished for saying Ukrainian words and needed to stay in the corner. He was afraid of his teacher as they could not understand each other's languages. Later his aunt was his teacher but she did not favour him more than others. \nLater he and his brothers started speaking more English also among Ukrainians, however, they still spoke Ukrainian at home.\nHis father only went to grade 3 and mother went to grade 5. The church was Ukrainian and the community as well.\nIn later years he started to be involved with softball and other sports. At the time when he was in grade 8-9, the amount was English they used in proportion with Ukrainian was about 90 percent. There were 4 main religious groups (Roman Catholic, Russian Orthodox, United Church, Ukrainian Church). It also made some things difficult as they could not associate with some of the families, they did not visit each other. Later this religious division became less prominent. After the 5th grade, he had a strict teacher. Starting from grades 8 and 9 he started to be more involved, was selected as a captain of the sports team. Boy scouts' membership was also very prominent. When the Queen and King came to Canada in 1939 he was selected as one of the members of the scout troop to meet them. He was also active in the 4-H club.\nAfter finishing grade 12 he wanted to go to study geology so he enrolled but the program was full and he did not get a spot, so he needed to wait for two years to start the program. There were a lot of students as many were coming back to education after the war, all the people who did not have the chance to do it before. His parents used to hire people to help them on the farm at least until he (as the oldest child in the family) started growing up, Sometimes he even missed some weeks of  University to help parents with farming. Most of the horses were Arabian.\nOne of his tasks was to deliver the cream and to pick up the can for the next portion. Most of the money was spent on essentials (clothing and groceries). Particularly during the depression years, life was very difficult.\nHe remembers as he was a child, the father needed to let a man without work go and his helper was furious.
