She was born on a farm near Stenen, Saskatchewan. Her family came to Canada in 1907 and Nellie was born in 1910. Her parents came from the \"Old Country\" but she doesn't remember exactly where. Her husband was also born in the Old Country, but she can't quite remember which country.\n\nWhen Nellie was 13, her mother died which forced Nellie to quit school so she could care for her younger brother and her father. She had a farm to run: pigs and cows to feed, and other tasks. After 2 or 3 years, her father remarried and Nellie was forced to get a job off of the farm.\n\nNellie finished grade 4, but many people those days didn't complete very much schooling.\n\nFor work Nellie cooked, did housework, and worked for a doctor at one point. When Nellie's mother was alive, they would have 12 different parts for the Christmas meal.\n\nBesides meat, they had milk, butter, and cream which they had to separate. Nellie talks a bit about how they made the butter. If something needed to be kept cool, they put it in the well.\n\nThey raised pigs, cows, chickens, and ducks. They had a garden which grew carrots, potatoes, tomatoes.
