They stored potatoes year round and they had pigs, chickens and cattle, but his parents never slaughtered their own cattle. They purchased some beef if they had money, and would butcher pigs, chickens, geese and ducks. For school, Walter would take a bit of bread with lard on it (smalec), and sometimes his family would buy peanut butter but not often. His family made their own jams out of the berries around them.\n\nDoris and her siblings would pick Saskatoon berries and mushrooms, and her family grew a lot of potatoes, kept chickens for eggs and had cottage cheese. \nFor Christmas, Walter's family celebrated with the traditional 12 dishes. They had many types of fish, kutia, bread and other dishes. Doris' family had kutia, pyrohy (perogies), holobtsi (cabbage rolls), studenets (headcheese), and various types of meat. \nThe store was mostly for buying spices, rice, coffee, tea and peanut butter. They took their own wheat to the mill so they did not need to purchase flour. Walter recalls that Lent was very strict and Doris agrees, with no meat in the first week and no meat on Fridays. Because the community priest was had 8 parishes, not all churches would have Easter service. Doris' family lived in Hafford where the priest's home parish was located, so they always had Easter. Walter remembers having church service at 4pm in the afternoon at times. \nThe children in Doris' family would get new shoes for Easter and the family would go to church in the buggy. She remembers service lasting about 2 hours and everybody singing Khrystos Voskres (Christ is Risen), and proceeding around the church. In Walter's experience, someone fired a shotgun during the procession.
