She grew up on a farm in Vantage. Knodel's mother came to Canada in about 1910 (later in the interview, she corrects herself). Her father came to Canada earlier, around 1905, on a cattle boat. She recalls that her father enjoyed the journey and he \"didn't mind the water\" and liked the animals. He wanted to come to Canada and couldn't afford another way. Knodel's father first went to Detroit, Michigan, and came to Toronto, Ontario, afterwards, where he worked on the street car for a few years. Then Knodel's father \"caught a train\" to the West \"where all the activity was\". He first worked on a farm north of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where he met Knodel's mother. Her mother had come to Canada alone. First, she worked as a seamstress in Vancouver, BC, for a couple of years. Then, she \"went down\" to Saskatchewan and worked as a family maid on the same farm Knodel's father was working. Her parents married in 1911, and homesteaded in Cavendish near Empress, Alberta. In 1920, Knodel's parents left for Saskatchewan and moved on a rented farm as they had had very poor crops on their homestead. Her parents took what they had and traveled by train. On their homestead, there had been a drought, dust storms, cyclones and no crops. Her parents rented a farm in Saskatchewan for 20 years. It was better for a few years, and then they got the same drought in Saskatchewan but they couldn't afford to move anymore. Knodel's sister was born in Alberta, she herself in Saskatchewan. The family had roots there, they went to school there.\nAsked why her parents went to Canada, Knodel recalls that there were advertisements in England that Canada was a place to go to, with plenty of land. Her mother even said she wouldn't mind to homestead in the North, it was an experience for her. The interviewer states that Knodel's mother was \"brave coming by herself\". Knodel replies: \"Yes, she was\".\nKnodel's father was born in London, England. (The interviewer is impressed and states that Knodel's father came \"from the heart of England\".) Knodel's mother was born in Wales. She can't recall the place but it was a little town outside of Birmingham (Birmingham is in England). \nKnodel considers her ancestry English. She never spoke any other language than English, although she had to take French in school.","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Synopsis"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615#t=1.0,411.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615/index/52463/annotation/3","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"droughts","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"immigration","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"languages","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Subjects"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615#t=1.0,411.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615/index/52463/annotation/4","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"English","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}},{"type":"TextualBody","value":"French","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Keywords"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615#t=1.0,411.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615/index/52463/annotation/5","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Places of residence, education, teaching","format":"text/plain","label":{"en":["Title"]}}],"target":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615#t=411.0,717.0"},{"id":"https://ualberta.aviaryplatform.com/collections/1776/collection_resources/58571/file/132615/index/52463/annotation/6","type":"Annotation","motivation":"supplementing","body":[{"type":"TextualBody","value":"Knodel lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, in 1941/42. Knodel got married in 1947, and went to Tilley, Alberta, with her husband. Then they moved to Brooks, Alberta, for two years, and then they came to Medicine Hat and stayed there.\nKnodel has finished high school but it was all home schooling. For the first nine years, she went to rural schools. Grade 10, 11, 12, she took at home but she used to go to the town school to write the exams. They studied on their own except for grade 11 and 12 when a lady from England helped them with certain subjects like history and English. They had to go nine miles with horse and buggy once a week to see her. It took them about an hour and a half or two hours to get there. The lady was a former teacher who had got married and had two adopted children. She didn't charge anything but Knodel's father gave her produce from the farm. Knodel went there with another girl from the district. Her older sisters went to that lady too. The lady didn't like maths. \nLater, Knodel went to the teacher training for a years. Her father also had two or three sisters, and he also communicated with them until the war, and then he lost track of them. Her sister tracked down some cousins and one sister of her father but she couldn't come to Canada as they couldn't afford the journey. She and her sisters collected some money, and her aunt stayed with each of them for a month: \"She was good. She was very much like my dad.\" She lived to 93 or 94. Knodel communicated with her cousins, one of them will come over in spring. They reconnected with their relatives after her father's death. She enjoys this communication because she never had any cousins.\nKnodel's sister in Vancouver did everything to locate the Blackburn family. Her mother's relatives (her maiden name was Evans) were all gone. There are not too many Blackburns, and her sister went to the Mormons to do research. That's where she found out that their aunt was living. Knodel repeats that she was very fond of her aunt and she enjoyed her aunt's stay in Canada.\nKnodel underlines that she had a good but very poor life. She thinks she was fortunate because they had so much activity in their home. It wasn't a big home (two bedrooms). They didn't have a furnace but a heater in the front room and a kitchen stove. They would put racks (heated in the oven) in a blanket and heat the beds. They would also use stones or bricks. They also used tanned hides from a cow - they were very warm. They were stuffed with felt and put on the blankets.
