When she was eight years old, the family moved to Englefeld, Saskatchewan because they had had no crops for several years. His father had ordered box cars for moving but they didn't arrive. Later his father would complain.\nHer mother came to Canada in 1914, her father in 1914, both from Landau, Russia (today Shyrokolanivka, Mykolaiiv oblast, Ukraine). Her husband was born in Bromhead, Saskatchewan.\nJansen would move from Englefeld to Watson with her parents. When she got married, she moved to LeRoy, and after their retirement, they moved to Humboldt.\nShe went to school until grade 8. She went to a two-rooms school. They always listened to what the teacher was teaching in the next grade. In the winter,  a covered sleigh with a stove in it would pick up the children along the route and take them to school. She recalls the farm chores she did.\nShe grew up with eight siblings, she was the sixth girl and the seventh child. They lived in a house with three rooms. In the 1930s, there weren't any crops for seven years but they received seven dollars a month for relief but they had to pay it back. Her father had to do road work. What was bought was flour, sugar and salt. They had chickens and cattle and drank milk. There was no coffee or tea. They were constantly eating noodles.\nThe grocery store owner would order clothings and shoes at Simpson's. Their dresses were made out of flour sacks from Robin Hood Flour. The name of the company was washed out, the fabric partially dyed. There was also nothing in the garden that would grow. In 1936/37, there were sand storms. They had to put wet towels on the window seals so that the sand wouldn't come in. The sand also cover the fence and the cattle would go out. She recalls an incidence when her father was looking for her and her siblings and couldn't find them during a dust storm as the sand was so thick.\nAfter seven years, Jansen's father rented some land, and the family moved to another place. The had 21 cows and shipped the cream to town. Their uncles in the United States would send them dried fruits, and they used them for their Christmas cake. It was a German Kuchen, with cinnamon and sugar, called Zuckerkuchen.\nWhen they moved to Englefeld, they would grow potatoes vegetables and can them.\nThere weren't any slacks for girls at that time. It was cold in wintertime. They had rubber overshoes, they were pretty cold. Not only the dresses, shirts for the boy were also made of flour sacks. Sometimes, their uncle from the United States would also send them clothing. The relief car would also bring them some clothes and food. They would exchange pears for potatoes. Her sister would hide some pears as they had never eaten pears before. They also ate dried coat fish, most people didn't know how to cook it. They would go with their neighbours who had a car but only a few of them could go every Sunday. They couldn't go all at the same time. When they got a car, they went together, 12 people sitting on each others knees. She describes in detail how that worked. When they couldn't afford gas anymore, they had to use the horses again.\nThe church they went to was a basement church. It was a Catholic church. In Englefeld, they walked to church 3.5 miles.\nThey said the rosary in the evening and prayed before meals.\nThey always had apples and oranges at Christmas. They would get a doll from the neighbours, the rest of the gifts was home-made. They would also get some nuts in their stockings.\nAt Easter, eggs were dyed with onion skins or beets. Her brother couldn't speak English when he got to school, and befriended a boy who could speak only French.\nHer older siblings would bring English from school, and the younger siblings learned it from them.
