The department of statistics lost records of him and his sister were lost and he could not find his birth certificate. Later he was working in Manitoba but his home was in Saskatchewan and was told to bring his birth certificate. They also were not able to find it in the church as it had fire. His mother was born in Saskatchewan in a small town on a farm. They were looking for the birth certificates everywhere but people were not helpful and it was a big challenge to get it. After he saw his birth certificate he was that his real name was John. It was the place where both his brothers started going to school. In the year 1933 or 1934 his family moved to Preeceville. As a kid he broke his leg. He remembers that he fell down and after this was walking all the day, but in the night the bone came through the skin. At this time he was about five years old. The doctor was about 35 miles away so never saw a doctor. His grandmother somehow just took a bone out of his leg and since that time he has a hole there. She used to put special leaves on his leg until it finally healed. The rats were eating the small geese.\nThe municipality was supplying the poison for the rats. Eventhough Alberta was considered to be rat-free, there were times like these when there were a lot of them around. During the war he was responsible for feeding 12000 pigs. It was not possible to buy land in the Norwegian district  if you were not Norwegian. In the west of town there were Ukrainians and Hungarians.\nHe had very good neighbours. \nNorth of the lake there were English people. They had good relationship with the most of their neighbours.\nThey used to collect a special type of weed to make the tea out of it. Garlic was very popular type of food, people also ate it with bread. Only Ukrainians and Germans loved garlic, other used to call these people \"garlic snap\" to bother them. His mother only had 3 dollars 50 cents a month which was not enough to make a living with a big family. She went to the town office to ask for support, wanted to go to the council meeting but the town secretary told her wrong dates. Eventually she somehow managed to get a raise and got about 30 or 35 dollars after someone helped and wrote a letter from her name that she submitted. \nThey had a garden and these years there were many berries. They had a lot of potatoes in the garden. Many people used to keep cabbage in the cellar, sometimes even until February, Also they had a lot of sauerkraut. There were many potato bugs. Sometimes they needed several days in a row to remove the bugs.\nThey had meat and many people held chicken and other animals in the town. In the creamery where he was later working it was possible to buy the buttermilk. Men and women had a bit different types of work to do, girls usually swept the floor. Everybody drank milk, they also produced the butter. The instruments were done from wood, it took about an hour to make the butter out of the cream. \nAlso they produced cottage cheese. There was a room which they used to cover with snow during the spring and the winter and it held cool for almost the whole summer, they used this room for cooling the milk, cream and cheese. Eggs were very cheap (7 cents a dozen).\n\nDinner: He remembers his teacher at school used to say, that they should not eat at school.\nFor the dinner they used to eat fried potatoes, onions, sauerkraut with butter.\n\nWhen his father was still alive, they took lard with bread to school for lunch.\n\nSometimes they also ate macaroni and cottage cheese. Sometimes his mother did sauerkraut soup, she did all the cooking, baked also bread and it was possible to smell it from a long distance. She usually did it once a week. From the store she usually bought lard, flour, sugar, coffee.\nHis neighbours were collecting bills from all purchases they ever bought (starting from 1928). The lake they were living close to was loaded with fish and his father was fishing there, but many people were afraid to fish without a license (they did not have money to get the a license to fish).\n\nMany people had a trap which was used to catch fish. Remembers how they went with friends and fished together, sometimes they were also drinking the home brew. One of the guys had a uniform on so they were not caught. Some even used a fork to catch the fish, but he preferred using a knife. Many of his friends were also called Mike. Saturdays they used to go for barn dances out of town (at the Lady Lake, or Chrystal Lake for example). Many farmers used to go to these dance evenings.
