Father would wear a coat, grandfather had kozhukh. If a piece of clothing was already worn out, it would be resewn for younger boys.\nWomen's society gathered and sewed dresses for us. They also gave us winter clothing once. We didn't know English at first. There was a girl who would ask me something in English, and I was supposed to answer yes or no, but I didn't understand what she was asking. I would sometimes say yes. She would ask me: \"Would you like me to hit you?\" Once we got into a fight with that girl. It wasn't the first time they were beating us. As we would walk home, they would wait for us in the bush and would attack us from there. There were four of us: two brothers and two of us girls. So, my father went to the school board. And there was an Englishman there who said: \"If you don't like it here, why don't you leave.\" That was it. Father was hoping that they would stop those kids from beating us. Englishmen didn't want us among them.\nFather wrote to the Ukrainian Voice. And other people wrote that there is land, and other Ukrainians came and settled. Then we would go to school all together. And when those English kids would attack us, the boys would beat them, and they stopped.\nIf we jump to this time, I went to visit my sister Paulina Lysak near Nipawin. We went to see their annual concert. I looked at the program. There had to be Ukrainian dance. One could do Ukrainian dance instead of physical education. There were German, French, Spanish, all kinds of names in the program. Those families who tortured us, their children now dance Ukrainian dances. One German man said: \"I used to be German and I married a German woman, but our children are Ukrainian.\" Because they liked Ukrainian dance so much. Sometimes, father would take us to the school on a sleigh, but mostly we would walk. In winter, father would also read to us from the Bible during breakfast. We didn't have English books, and only a few Ukrainian ones. So, they would read to us in Ukrainian and we could also read. Mother taught us to embroider. We would write letters to Didus' Naum in the Ukrainian Voice. We were always occupied. We also wrote letter to our grandparents.
