Her parents were farmers that made their living by raising animals and growing crops. They had horses, cows, pigs, chickens, and geese. They had a huge garden where they would grow crops. Her father only worked on the farm in those early years because they had to clear brush. They lived off the land in those times. Picking berries like blueberries, raspberries, and Saskatoon berries. There was no fruit, only crabapples. There weren't many other kinds of fruit in the store. They didn't have too many cattle, but they did sell cream and milked the cows. They had one or two pigs at a time with a litter maybe once a year.\n\nThey grew oats and wheat. They had a lot of brush they had to clear and maybe had an acre or two to cultivate every year. They would work the land in the summer and clear the trees in the winter, using the wood for fires. The land wasn't very good: there were a lot of stones and roots to pick. It was hard work. Olga didn't help too much as she was only 10 when they left Bellis. Olga thinks her mother worked harder than her father did as she was the one who was always doing housework and milking the cows. She also worked in the field.\n\nOlga's school was only a half mile away, which was good.\n\nIn the garden, they grew everything. A lot of cabbage, cucumbers, turnips, potatoes (a half acre of potatoes). Olga's mother would boil and mash potatoes for the pigs in winter because Olga's father would give the grain to the horses. The land didn't produce much grain. They had hills, a small lake, and valleys so they couldn't grow much. A lot of the land was very sandy, so growing was difficult without rain. Olga's mother was very good at gardening. She always planted the cucumbers on the side of a hill facing west. They didn't have to spray to get rid of bugs as there weren't that many bugs that destroyed crops. Her mother worked very hard. Her father worked, too, but he was more of an easy-going type. The garden by the house didn't need to be watered too often as they didn't have much water.\n\nOlga's mother also grew flowers. Olga lists the type of flowers she grew. The garden wasn't fenced, but wild animals didn't damage much in the garden. Pigs would do damage if they got out. Olga's mother saved a lot of her seeds from year to year. Olga's mother would also make a big barrel of cucumbers which might have been frozen. If they wanted the sauerkraut or cucumbers, they would have to chop them out with an axe or a knife. The cucumbers really tasted good. There weren't many jars, so what jars they had were used for fruits more than vegetables. Usually berries. The vegetables were more often dried than preserved.\n\nWhen picking berries, Olga would go with her sisters or her neighbours. They would walk 2 miles and pick berries day after day. They would spend whole days picking the berries. They would collect the berries in lard cans or pails. There were lots of Saskatoon berries on the farm as there were so many hills. Raspberries were wild. Summer was for picking berries. So much time was spent on work and picking that there wasn't time to go out. They would trap muskrats or rabbits and sell the skins. Coyotes weren't trapped as those had to be shot. Weasels were also trapped. They would also pick a lot of mushrooms in those days. Olga talks about some of the mushrooms they would pick. They took the cows to some open land with no farms on it. Feeding cows, pigs, or chickens wasn't Olga's job growing up: it was always her parents or a sibling that did it. She attributes this to being the middle child.\n\nThey traveled to visit relatives or neighbours, but no where else. They might go into town once a week for the mail. Olga remembers they always had runaway horses. Olga was with her mother and brother when their horses got spooked and started running: the cart wound up in the ditch and the horses ran off. Luckily, no one was hurt. Olga thinks her father might have been mean to the horses because the other peoples' horses didn't run away. They ran away with field machinery and other things.\n\nTown was 6 miles away, so traveling to town would take at least an hour to get there. Olga enjoyed going to town. Stores weren't filled with things people didn't need: only main staples were carried. They did purchase coal oil so they could have light. Her parents got Olga a doll that she really enjoyed. She had to hide the doll from her brother who really wanted it. Unfortunately, she hid it in the ceiling and lost it there. All of her toys were handmade. Olga's father was handy and would carve things.\n\nOlga would play ball in the summer and go sledding in the winter. They never had skates and so never played hockey. Kids would still cut their own hair if they found a pair of scissors. Hair was straight cuts. If you wanted them curled, you did it with rags and other cloth. Olga's mother had naturally curly hair.\n\nFor clothes, they always had hand-me-downs. Olga's mother was also good at sewing. She had a sewing machine which Olga still has. They talk about the price of fabric and threads. Neighbours would get together and pluck the feathers necessary for pillows and quilts. Women would visit with each other while men would visit with each other. Olga's father would sometimes bring his violin.\n\nSometimes they would sing at these visits. They would sing Ukrainian songs and tell stories. Olga once got something on her back: sores from something but she doesn't know what. Olga's mother covered Olga's back in homemade butter and the dog licked the butter off of Olga's back. The sores healed after that. She thinks there's something in the dog's saliva that might have been good. There was no cough syrup at the time because they never went to a doctor. They had some iodine for wounds. Salt was also used for sores and wounds. Yarrow was used as a remedy for stomach aches and things like that.\n\nHerbal teas were called \"Indian tea\" it was a specific kind of herb that was used. It was a mild tea. Parsley was used as a medicinal tea, as well.
