He was called a \"kraut\" in his youth.\nHe was born on February 7, 1923, in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. He was three years old when his parents moved to Canada. His maternal grandfather was already living in Alix, Alberta.\nPgetzke's father was born in Russia and came to Germany as a Russian POW in WW I. He remained there after the end of the war and worked as a farmhand but he wanted to be his own boss.\nPgetzke's great-grandfather helped the family to buy their own farm close to New Sarepta, Alberta. Pgetzke stayed there until 1958 when he moved to Edmonton and got a job with Edmonton Transit.\nPgetzke recalls that he finished only grade 7 as his teacher became sick with scarlet fever and died. Pgetzke also fell ill but survived although he wasn't brought to a hospital because of a snow storm.\nPgetzke's father died in 1948 of lung cancer, so he took over the farm. He also worked as a truck driver. Later he was working in the oil industry. Then he worked for Edmonton Transit and had to pass an exam.\nPgetzke grew up as an an only child before his parents adopted a girl born in 1936. He also had a half-sister in Ukraine who managed to get out of the Soviet Union 1950, and his father had left money in his will so that she could come to Canada. She came with 4 children.\nIn ethnic terms, he describes himself German as well as Ukrainian. When he started school, he spoke only German and broken Ukrainian. He was sent to a German church school in order to write to his relatives in Germany. His family attended church every Sunday. His neighbours were mostly Scandinavians, Ukrainians and Germans. He recalls that in his family, they had German as well as Canadian dishes but they used the Gregorian calendar.\nPgetzke's father spoke Ukrainian with him. He spoke German, Russian, Polish and Ukrainian as well as broken English. His mother came from an ethnic German family in Poland.\nOn Sundays, they would visit relatives. Pgetzke says that the Lutheran church didn't do too much to maintain the German language. He recalls what kind of celebrations were celebrated in his family. He liked also to play baseball. On Halloween, children took the wheels off the wagons. They used to take grain to a flour mill so they didn't have to buy flour.\nPgetzke's parents took over the quarter from his maternal great-grandfather who had immigrated from Volhynia before 1900. But his father had to buy the land from a landowner originally from North Dakota. In a POW camp in Austria, his father served as an interpreter.\nHe recalls animosities during WW II as some people were against the Germans and the leader of the German club was interned. Pgetzke says that he deserved it. But most people felt Canadian. He recalls a visit in Nuremberg in 2000 when he was confronted with the Nazi past in a museum.\nHe recalls servicing cars after he retired.\nHe also describes his wife's background.
