Chickens were very important as they could be prepared very quickly. Diary was always available for his family as they had cows but this also meant that there were two cows to be milked. The diary was very important during the depression years. Turkeys were available as well.\nChristmas eve was a very religious celebration for his family, so 12 dishes were always there, the dishes were meatless so fish played a big role in this dinner. Pyrohy, holubtsi , kolachi, dried fruits and kutia were usually on the table. His father was very demanding and it was very important for him to celebrate Christmas according to the religious canons.\nEaster was also celebrated, they ate blessed paska ( it was around 10-12 inches in diameter, was decorated and had raisins in it). The religious part was also important for them: they had a candle and the icons, religious pictures were brought on to the wall. The mother did stitching and embroidery and prepared a special cloth for the table. \nMemories on working with the wool and the yarn (around 1930-1932).\nThe church was a very big part of their family life and was overall very important. Andy Antoniuk remembers visits by the priest at Saturday and stayed over night to hold services on Sunday. He went to church every Sunday, and his parents were singing in the church choir. He emphasized the social function going to church. Both parents sang in a church choir and were very involved, the father was a church treasurer. He was mainly self-taught as he only finished only 5 grades of school. When he came he bought horses and a wagon and as a result, people needed him to help with supply. Once he was called in Edmonton in November during the very heavy frost. In order to get home over the river, he needed to break the ice ahead of the horses. After this, he got pneumonia and died. Several children left without father, life was very hard for the mother alone. When immigrant pioneers came first there were no railroads so churches were built where the nearest farmer´s community was located. The priest came sometimes and it was a special occasion, the cemetery was not open yet. His grandfather was buried close to another church. Later the church burned down and people built a new one in the village of Chipman itself around 1920.\nHe used to go to the church every Sunday and the priest was also there, later the communication roads were developed. Around the time of WW2 the frequency of the church attendance was reduced (the connections were problematic, the priest was not regularly available as well). Simpsons catalogue was the information source and as a kind of present, the parents let them open it and see what is inside. Clothing, boxes, toys  (guns, games) became typical presents. In the early 30s, people had not enough money. His father bought a car in 1936 but could not afford to drive it. Starting from 1937 there were some good crops and as a result, living became a bit better. \nEaster was also celebrated in the way that people went to the church. They had church services, priests blessed paskas but no Church dinners. There was no work being done on Sunday (only chores needed to be done). \nBirthdays were recognized but celebrations for them were not too big. The mother did a lot of food jars for storage. For a birthday the mother would open a strawberry jar, mashed it and it was served as a drink. He got his first birthday gift at the age of approximately ten. There was no big visiting tradition for birthdays.\nCanada's Day did not start before the 1960s.\nRemembering the sports days which started around 1946-1947. Once they won some money in the tournament and it was exciting. Earlier Chipman was mainly settled by the Anglo-Saxon community, but around the mid-30s, there were about 60 percent Slavonic people. One of his older cousins built a special platform for dances (for their wedding celebrations in 1937). This celebration was very memorable as the dances impressed him a lot and he decided to learn dancing. Later he learned dancing in the high school (around 1945, in grade 12) from a teacher at school who also taught them classical music. Tsymbaly (were always present), drums, guitars, saxophone, accordions were the usual musical instruments. On the weekend the children collected the magpie and crows eggs and were paid for them at school Mondays. Most of the neighbours were of Ukrainian background. At that time his best friends were cousins and neighbours.\nIn 1939 he bought his first bicycle.
