She grew up in Winnipeg on the north end. She does not know when her parents came to Canada, but knows it was in the early 1900's. Her family came from Poland but she doesn't know where. Her husband was also born in Winnipeg and she has lived in Winnipeg her whole life. Helen went to a Polish school for elementary school and finished grade 9. For work, Helen used to cater and worked as a hairdresser. She also worked cleaning furs. She lived with her parents and her brother when she was growing up. Her ancestry is Polish. Unfortunately, Helen does not remember her Polish or Ukrainian since an accident she had a few years prior to the interview. She doesn't remember what they ate for dinner but she remembers having an old wood stove. Her family celebrated Christmas in December and she mentions that her family had a special meal for both Christmas and Easter. For clothing, they purchased it because their mother did not have time to sew as she was working. Helen does not remember clothing being much different than what she wears now. She didn't wear slacks, but she wore skirts, blouses and dresses. For chores, Helen mostly cooked when she was around the age of the 12/13. She cleaned up in the house starting at the age of 8. Her mother worked at Eaton's and cleaning buildings. Her father worked at Dominion Wheel and Foundry [she calls it Dominion Wheel Foundry] for nearly 50 years. Her house had 7 or 8 rooms and they would rent out rooms in the house, usually to men, but there were a few girls as well. Her family attended a Roman Catholic church called Holy Ghost every Sunday. She remembers having fun around Christmas and going to relatives for the holidays. They would take their baskets to church to be blessed on Easter Sunday as well, she also made decorated Easter eggs by coloring them, and she recalls that Easter has always been the same. She said there was always drinks, a cake and presents. Presents were often anything the kids wanted or needed, like baseball gloves or clothes. Birthdays were celebrated among family members, but when they were young they would have school friends over. Her family never celebrated Dominion day. For Thanksgiving they would have a special dinner. They always celebrated Halloween and they would dress up. They would purchase masks from the store. Helen talks about a tragic Halloween where her son died because he was cut by an apple with a knife in it. \n\nHelen remembers going to all parish feasts and going to church for most Holidays. Her father was the bartender at a beer parlor in the church. Her family used to sing, and her parents sang in a choir. Helen later sang in the choir when her parents did not anymore. Helen played sports, but she remembers not being good at it. She remembers just listening to whatever was on the radio, mostly just music. Helen's family owned a car, she remembers it being a nice car but she does not remembers brand names or anything. Her parents would drive to work, and drive them to the country to visit friends and go mushroom picking.
