Her parents lost their farm during the Depression, and her father left the family, leaving back her mother with six or seven children. She doesn't know very much about him. Her father came from Ontario, her mother from Nova Scotia.\nHer husband was born in Annaheim, Saskatchewan, and was of German descent.\nEbert went to school first in Nora, Saskatchewan, before she was transferred to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where she lived with an aunt who was extremely religious from 1934 to 1939.\nShe recalls picking flowers with her sister. She associates Medicine Hat with cactuses and rattle snakes.\nThey had access to railway tickets as her uncle was working at the CPR.\nHer mother was a Catholic, her father was not. \nShe recalls her time in a Catholic schools with nuns. She thought that they were witches as she had never seen nuns before.\nAfter 1939, she continued her education in Saskatoon where her mother was living. After that, she went to a teacher's college and took classes at the university of Saskatoon.\nShe had to wear a skirt but as the way to school was so long, she wore slacks or pants and took them off when she arrived at school.\nAs a little girl, she wore dresses. For some time, they had to wear uniforms.\nHer mother applied to relief after her father left the family. She got 15 dollars a month. They ate a lot of bread and potatoes. There was a store keeper who would give their mother food. She doesn't have a lot of information on her father's side.\nShe shows family photographs of her mother and maternal ancestors, the McNeil family who came to Nova Scotia.\nEbert explains how her mother's family came to Saskatchewan from Nova Scotia. Her maternal grandmother died giving birth to her mother. Her grandfather died too shortly afterwards. They were wards of a politician in Nova Scotia, and they were put to St. Joseph's orphanage. Her mother's elder brother Frank McNeil came to Saskatchewan, and his sisters joined him.\nLooking at family photographs, Ebert recalls that her aunt looked much more severe than her mother. Talking about her aunt, she says that her favourite nephew had been the middle son of her mother's brother. The three sons of her mother's brother were half-orphaned, and her aunt took them also in.\nShe recalls that one sister idealized her aunt whereas the other one doesn't want to talk about her. Two of her brothers joined to army and were sent overseas after six weeks of training in Ontario. She didn't know them that well as she had been away from home. She recalls the death of her elder brother and also a service with an empty coffin as he was buried in Italy. She remembers that her other brother nearly knocked her out when she woke him up in the morning as he was trained to react. Her brother seemed very different after six years in the battlefield. A neighbour was teaching at university and writing poetry, they had nice gladiolas. They used to steal his apples.\nThere were only three high schools in Saskatoon. She befriended with two girls. One of them called Wilma died a year ago, she attended her funeral. She was not Catholic. Her mother baked butter tarts for them. They loved to skate.\nShe recalls that there were a lot of Russian Germans in Medicine Hat. She remembers the Greenstein family, and the boys would smell of garlic. Once, the girl of the Greensteins showed her a cat with two heads still living.\nOnce she went to school two or three minutes late and she and her friend got strapped and she was very afraid of her aunt. She was confined to the basement for a couple of days for punishment.\nShe recalls some animosities between Protestants and Catholic.\nDuring WW II she didn't realize what effect the war had on the Germans, and her husband (of German descent) never talked about it. Some Germans would later talk about how they were persecuted. She recalls documentaries on the Nazi period and thinks that Saddam Hussein is another Göring.\nShe talks about Russian Germans and thinks that many Ukrainians were from Russia, too.\nShe recalls going to Germany and that her surname is very wide-spread here. Her husband could speak German quite well. She would invite a lot of Germans for supper in later years, and many would speak Germans.
